Although it may sound like a cliché, hugs are extremely important for the human health.
The need for a warm embrace goes deeper than the emotional part, and as experts suggest, it can bring plenty of health benefits to the body.
Findings from Hugging Research
The human body normally produces some levels of oxytocin, but with hugging this level increases significantly. Oxytocin represents a neurotransmitter located in the central area of the brain.
As a result, it can stimulate feelings of happiness, lower stress levels and stress and less anxiety as well. That is why hugging can become a great therapy that costs absolutely no money and is available at all times.
Also, many studies analyzed the remaining benefits of hugging. A study conducted by Carnegie Mellon University explained that hugging can decrease the odds for illnesses and stress.
The study included around 404 healthy individuals that were carefully monitored throughout the process.
Each of them filled a survey, and all were asked about the frequency of argumentative situations in their lives as well as hugging.
The study took place via telephone and lasted for two weeks.
Shortly after, all subjects were purposely infected with a common cold virus. This would further on show how the benefits of hugging work.
The results suggested that people who found themselves in a conflict situation were less immune to the virus. On the other hand, subjects who engaged into regular hugging showed less illness symptoms.
Here is how Sheldon Cohen, the Robert E. Doherty University Professor of Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University explained the study:
“This suggests that being hugged by a trusted person may act as an effective means of conveying support and that increasing the frequency of hugs might be an effective means of reducing the deleterious effects of stress. The apparent protective effect of hugs may be attributable to the physical contact itself or to hugging being a behavioral indicator of support and intimacy.”
He finished, “Either way, those who receive hugs are somewhat more protected from infection.”
